The 2.3 liter S14 4-cylinder engine gained strengthened internals and reduced compression, bumping output to over 300 horsepower. Adjustable anti-roll bars and lowered, stiffened suspension improved cornering grip. Box-flared fenders widened the track to accommodate racing wheels and tires. Minimum interior trim and a full roll cage lightened the E30 M3 over-the-road car.

Peak of Rally Success from 1987-1989

The E30 M3 rally car debuted in European events in 1987. After early teething issues, the M3 began racking up wins through the late 1980s. In 1987, the M3 took home victory at the demanding Rallye San Remo in Italy. This milestone confirmed the E30’s potential against rival machinery.

More wins followed in 1988, including triumphs at the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally and Portugal Rally. Driver Tony Pond helped claim the 1988 British Rally Championship in the E30. In 1989, Pond added three more European rally wins piloting the M3. Over just a few years, the E30 cemented its reputation as a rally giant killer.

Why It Won: Lightweight Precision on Tarmac

What made the E30 M3 rally car so effective? Its rear-wheel drive balance and traction proved ideal for tight tarmac rallies popular in Europe. Minimal weight, around just 2500 pounds, also helped the E30 change direction nimbly. Smooth power delivery kept the rear wheels in line accelerating out of turns. And the robust drivetrain held up to extreme rally abuse.

Lower and wider than rivals like the Lancia Delta HF Integrale, the E30 maintained a composed grip even at high speeds. For drivers, the E30 M3 delivered confidence-inspiring agility. This handling precision guided the E30’s success on the world’s toughest tarmac events.
